 | 10:29 pm - LTL, FTP (Long Time Lurker, First Time Poster) Hello, I'm a newbie from Anchorage, Alaska! I've been collecting horrors for the last few months, so I've got some awful stuff to show you. The first batch starts with this thing:
OH MY GOD THE LEFTOVER HALLOWEEN RAT HAS MAN-BOOBS. And a belly button. WHY. ( Read more... )</div>

 | 09:52 pm - Burda mens sizing question and a chair refashion (possibly tutorial?) Started out to make this for my husband (BWOF 08/09 133):

Got frustrated when the muslin was ridiculously huge even though I used the corresponding chest size in the chart. I had some busy sewing energy so I recovered my husband's home office chair from a thrifted curtain instead. I used a zipper down the back to get a tight fit for a clean, upholstered look. I was really pleased with the result.

More pics on my livejournal including chair before and after. I'm thinking of doing a tutorial since I have one more chair to make a pattern for (my chair). Anyone interested? I will take pictures and try to document how I do it.
Also...
Has anyone made that Burda men's jacket? The sizing for men in their magazine seems totally whack. I'm wondering if I have a typo or something, it's that bad. Would love to hear any feedback on Burda sizing for men.

| 11:53 pm - What motivates you? This is a general question, what types of things motivate you with your weight loss? What weightloss websites/blogs/magazines do you like to turn to for ideas.
For instance, I like using tweetwhatyoueat.com to make sure I'm staying on track. I also like reading the Fit Sugar section of teamsugar.com
What're your nifty weight loss tools (aside from the ones on the profile page)

 | 10:54 pm - The Revolution I'm about two-thirds through Ron Paul's book The Revolution: A Manifesto and wondered if anyone else had read it. And if so, what are your thoughts / opinions?
As I'm reading it, I find myself wishing more Americans had read this book. I don't agree with a hundred percent of it, but most of it is refreshing, straight-forward common sense. Especially with regard to Constitution. It's making consider some things that I hadn't thought of before, things that I hadn't thought to question because they are simply a given part of the world I grew up in. And it is making me understand a little better why a few of my friends decided on write-in votes for him last year.

 | 12:04 am - Long time lurker, first time poster... Hi there!
So, I was sewing a set of tab-top curtains this weekend for my bedroom. I've lined the curtains with a fleece-let fabric (It's an energy conservation thing. I hope.), which is making the whole structure pretty... thick. According to the very basic pattern I'm following, my next (and final) step is to attach the tab tops to the curtain by sandwiching the top of the curtain and top stitching each tab into place.
Now, my dilemma.
When I went to sew the first tab on things were fine. Then, suddenly, during the second tab, my machine gave a loud "bang!" and the needle snapped in two. I removed the curtain, replaced the needle and checked to see if my machine would sew okay.
It won't. Unfortunately, this is my first machine and I'm very much a beginner seamstress. I don't know what is wrong, exactly. When I sew a straight line everything works just fine. The reverse stitch is where I seem to have an issue: the fabric bunches instead of being pulled back, so the stitching goes to one side. The piece that my bobbin sits in appears to be loose, I can hear it clattering around and it's easy to move. Does that mean something I can't see is broken, maybe something that holds the bobbin part in place? Anyone know of a way I can fix this all by my lonesome? Or should I just schedule an appointment with a trained professional now? Current Mood: anxious

 | 06:14 pm - Santa Fe Chicken I made this for dinner tonight, along with some white rice and sour cream. It turned out wonderfully, so I figured I would share. I'll definitely be making it again!
Crock Pot Santa Fe Chicken Courtesy Gina's Weight Watcher Recipes
Serves 8 / Points: 4.25 ww points
* 24 oz (1 1/2) lbs chicken breast * 14.4 oz can diced tomatoes with mild green chile peppers * 15 oz can black beans * 8 oz frozen corn (I used canned, it worked just as well) * 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro * 14.4 oz can fat free chicken broth * 3 scallions, chopped * 1 tsp garlic powder (I added extra before serving) * 1 tsp onion powder (I added extra before serving) * 1 tsp cumin * 1 tsp cayenne pepper (to taste) * salt to taste
Combine chicken broth, beans, corn, tomatoes, cilantro, scallions, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, cayenne pepper and salt in the crock pot. Season chicken breast with salt and lay on top. Cook on low for 10 hours or on high for 6 hours. Half hour before serving, remove chicken and shred. Return chicken to slow cooker and stir in. Adjust salt and seasoning. Serve over rice (extra pts).
I added some shredded sharp cheddar to each serving, along with a blob of sour cream. Yum! If you're not a rice fan, this would also go well with warmed tortillas, or on top of a baked potato. Taste-wise, it's a lot like chicken tortilla soup, but more hearty. Enjoy!

 | 12:34 pm - Pain Perdu Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for a really custardy pain perdu? I had a craving for it last night & made some baked french toast, but it didn't come out right. The leftovers are rock hard & I have them soaking in milk. I usually think of regular french toast as something really yummy when it's hot, but that I choke on when it starts to cool & get tough. Is thicker bread the secret? I thought it might come out better if I did it in the crockpot.

 | 05:05 pm - Running for Office This is a mass email that needs to be circulated. Just getting folks to run in a space has been a tactic for years to keep us on the ballot - except in OK as we all know. 'Firecracker' Norm Westwell advocates just filing and collecting the mail for the first year. He is now a school board member in Orange County - acquired on his 2nd run - and well on his way to abolishing the school board given his last movements and several other board members not keeping their pants nor mouths zipped. ;-) (Firecracker is the nickname acquired as he initially ran to have the freedom of firecrackers back on the beach as when he was a kid growing up around OC.)
Note the final paragraph. Gee, Libertarians bitch to one another? NAH! They wouldn't do that! ;-0 -------------------------------------- November 9, 2009
Dear Friend of Liberty,
I want you to run for office.
You may have already responded to my call to run for office and asked me how to go about it. Don't take it personally if I've failed to respond to any of your questions. I'm getting more and more emails, so the percentage of people I can respond to personally is going down. I need to give priority to questions from Libertarian National Committee members and Libertarian state chairs. Besides me, we just have three full-time staff members and three part-time staff, and they are doing their best to help.
Although we have a small staff, we're busy organizing and re-engineering our processes to maximize our effectiveness with the resources you contribute.
Here's a summary of how to run for office as a Libertarian:
1. Fill out this form. The form generates an email to your state party and puts you in our national candidate prospect database. http://www.lp.org/run-for-office
2. Contact your state party and local organizations by email or phone. State and local parties are your first means of support. Some states are more organized than others. Our national office will monitor state progress, and we will try to help out later as much as we can where gaps exist. http://www.lp.org/states ( Read more )
